The quest scroll is the quest tracker in the HUD. It starts closed, as one pixel parchment "Quests" control. Clicking it unrolls a narrow scroll with each quest and its progress, and clicking again rolls it closed.
How it works#
- Rows: each row has an icon on the left and the quest name on the right, with small square progress pips beneath the name. Simple dividers separate rows on one continuous parchment.
- The header is itself a rolled scroll with spindle ends. It stays still while the paper unfurls below it.
- The roll: a cylindrical lower roll turns as the paper unwinds. Its seam travels round the face and its diameter shrinks from 24 px to 16 px. Closing reverses this. A reversal in mid-animation starts from the current height and angle, without a jump.
- Unread marks: a new quest sets a red bobbing exclamation mark to the right of the control. An increased count sets a blue one. Both can show, red first. Opening the scroll clears them. They are session state, not saved.
- Access: keyboard activation works, closed content is inert, and reduced motion is respected. Longer lists scroll on short screens.
Development#
The design changed four times on 1 November, all in the lead's checkouts:
- Parchment scroll: the first version hid the tracker behind one Quests button. Retired The user rejected the broad brown parchment: height was fine, but width was not.
- Narrow framed boxes: the user supplied the original framed quest boxes and approved them, asking only to add names.
- One narrow scroll: the user then clarified that they meant square progress markers, not separate framed cards. The lead restored one narrow scroll with square pips.
- Winding scroll: a physical roll replaced the flat sliding lip, and the paper's side borders now end inside the roll.
A fresh visual judge scored the corrected scroll 8.8/10 against the user's marked-up reference. The focused scroll tests passed; a full HUD browser run stopped on an unrelated class-screen test.
The scroll styles ship in the alpha (src/hud/quests.css). The reports remain uncommitted in the shared checkout.
