Act II: The Boundary Is Not a Wall
Approved Story · facts checked 2 November 2026
Act II: The Boundary Is Not a Wall moves the story from a local oddity to a specific, multi-cell neuroimmune mechanism. Starwell and Vessel Margins become living communities. This is the first act whose central encounter is about inflammatory signalling.
Scenes#
| Scene | What happens |
|---|---|
| II1. The road that keeps its appointments | The Ranger travels Threadway. A small request (a late supply delivery) shows ordinary life. News from Starwell is conversation, not an alarm. |
| II2. Starwell doesn't run on gratitude | Aster has a real support conflict. The player helps set up a support contact. A Warden can learn Attune here. |
| II3. Many Hands | A cooperative outing that a solo Ranger can finish. A local resident may offer one supervised order to Mote. It grants nothing lasting. |
| II4. The visitors belong here | Vessa shows that border immune cells normally live at the vessel edge. They are not invaders. |
| II5. The Relay, first occurrence | A bounded room based on a rodent social-defeat relay. In one condition the relay can run; in the other it cannot. |
| II6. The contrast that matters | A second room has a similar symptom but no matching immune recruitment. Pip expected a familiar cause and is wrong this time. |
| II7. Hearth Grove hears about it | Mote takes a real east-line observation watch at Hearth. This makes Mote eligible for a later field invitation. It is not recruitment. |
“If I leave this one, the other one goes without. Which are you asking me to do?”
What the act teaches#
- Similar symptoms do not prove the same cellular mechanism.
- Where an immune cell is matters. Being near a vessel is not the same as entering the brain.
- Microglial change does not equal monocyte entry. See Stress-associated neurovascular relay.
At the curtain, the community has a better map of what it knows. It has not gained a free follower.
Development#
- Plan: scenes II1–II7 are in plan v0.5 Part IV. The one Act II order to Mote is the user's decision ("but only that once").
- In the alpha The Placeholder alpha has II1 as a journal chapter (visit a Threadway building, then reach Starwell). Chapter II2 is a marker that says the current story ends there. The lead's report lists the authored II2 support scene, the II3 supervised help and the II5 contrast as missing.
- Open science check: the plan requires a redesign of the Relay family before II5 ships. The old prototype raised alarms from debris, which is not the stress pathway. The v0.5 handoff lists the science check of the border relay as still open.
