Act V: The Break is the finale of Arborwake: The Long Wake. A sudden, local mechanical injury interrupts a familiar crossing. It is a different event from the stress story, not its last stage.
Spoiler: Act V (select to show)
The whole section below describes the finale.
Scenes#
| Scene | What happens |
|---|---|
| V1. The rupture | The Evening Pair stops at a sudden physical change. The player hears only the cellular world. There are no engines, voices or ambulances. |
| V2. The missing crossing | Threadway is cut at one crossing. A repaired Quiet District shortcut can help, but it is never required. |
| V3. Breach: the first real source | For the first time, there is real material to clear. Clearing it helps, but does not restore everything. |
| V4. The vessel isn't a second wound by default | Vessa's vessel may show a local change. Border residents are still not hostile. |
| V5. The place you cannot be | Two distant tasks. Nobody can do both. Pip cannot leave a home duty that would then be uncovered. |
| V6. The second problem remains | The source shrinks, but some function stays altered. "Cleared" and "recovered" are different things. |
| V7. Hold the crossing | Four phases: Find, Stabilise, Work, Hand over. The last action is a recovery handoff, not a boss kill. |
| V8. A quieter room after a very loud one | The emergency is over. Recovery is not. |
The plan's closing line for the climax is that it is "a network of people doing different jobs, not the Ranger achieving unlimited power."
Endings#
The finale has state-driven variants, not a branching tree. A prepared network saves trips. A solo or patchwork player does more walking but reaches the same resolution. A failed room restarts from a cellular checkpoint and keeps earlier progress. A voluntary retreat is always allowed. No side story, Imprint, recruit or relay post is a hidden gate.
Companions in the finale#
An active recruit may help with one compatible task. Mote observes, Fen checks a known open route and Pip holds a local assignment. None of them changes the injury's severity. A player with no recruit can finish the finale.
Development#
- User decision (31 October): the acute-injury finale is approved as authored. It was the user's own idea. The injury is the finale event, not the main game, and it is not a stage of stress.
- Refuge: plan v0.5 says Hearth becomes a refuge during the injury. On 31 October the user moved the refuge to Memory Meadow so that event staging never covers the player's built Hearth. The meadow refuge, night and aftermath art was approved the same day.
- No outside cause: the injury's human cause is never shown or named. See Science guardrails.
- Open: the v0.5 handoff lists the science check of the injury model as open. The lead's audit records a three-state Threadway injury study that is unapproved and not integrated.
- Nothing in Act V is in the alpha.
