Acute brain injury is the science behind Arborwake's finale, Act V: The Break. A sudden, local mechanical injury interrupts a familiar crossing. The game treats it as a different event from stress, not the end point of stress.
In the brain#
The points below follow the project's 29 October review on stress, sleep and injury.
- A traumatic brain injury starts its own immune response. It has immediate primary damage and later secondary processes.
- In rodents, stress before an experimental injury can change the outcome. Some studies found it worse and others found it protective, depending on the model and timing.
- These studies do not show that everyday stress primes human microglia for worse head injury.
- Stroke is a different injury with a different evidence base.
In the game#
- A separate event. The plan says the injury is not the culmination of a stress-to-injury progression. It has distinct primary and secondary effects.
- No outside cause. The cause is never shown or named. There are no engines, voices, ambulances or hospitals. See Science guardrails.
- Real clearance at last. Breach gives the first real material to clear. An ability that was wrong in a stress room is now useful, because the problem changed.
- Cleared is not recovered. Removing the source does not restore everything. The finale ends with a recovery handoff, not a cure.
- Vessels. A local vascular change may appear, but the plan forbids showing a destroyed blood–brain barrier across the whole game.
Development#
- The user approved the acute-injury finale as authored on 31 October. It was the user's own suggestion. The injury is the finale event, not the main game.
- The v0.5 handoff lists the science check of the finale's injury model as open.
