Stress-associated neurovascular relay

Approved Science · facts checked 2 November 2026

The stress-associated neurovascular relay is the research finding behind Arborwake's Relay scenes in Vessel Margins. The game pairs it with a second case that shows the same symptom without the relay.

The relay (McKim et al., 2018). Male mice went through six daily sessions of repeated social defeat by an aggressive mouse. Activity in threat-related regions came with local microglial changes and adhesion at the vessel lining. Microglia were linked to CCL2 signalling. Recruited monocytes made IL-1β, and its receptor was found on the vessel lining. Blocking key parts reduced recruitment and some anxiety-like measures.

Limits. This is a severe male-mouse model that includes physical confrontation. The drugs used have broad effects. Social avoidance was not prevented by the same microglial interventions. The signal acted at the vessel lining without needing a broken blood–brain barrier.

The counter-example (Lehmann et al., 2016). A different defeat protocol, with dominant and subordinate housing, found stress effects but no blood macrophage entry. The review says this contradiction is "not noise to be erased".
