Endurance is how many rooms the Ranger can take on in one outing. It is a pacing rule for play, not movement stamina and not a claim about how tired a cell gets.
How it works#
- You leave home with 6.
- Each room you clear costs 1. A failed attempt you retry costs 1 more. A calm room costs nothing.
- Ending a room Overwhelmed costs 1 more. That extra takes only what is left, so a cleared room is never refused afterwards.
- At 0 you cannot start another room, but you can always walk out with everything you banked: "Too worn out to take on another room. Head home; nothing you banked is lost."
- Home restores it fully. The Rest at the Apothecary restores +2, never above 4, once an outing, so a long outing still ends at home.
- Signal tuning at level 2 or 3 starts the outing at 5.
- Hearth boards cost no endurance.
Numbers#
Claude B's MODEL (real rules): one +2 rest between two 3-room branches lets 99% of typical players finish the outing, 84% of struggling players and 48% of rough players. Without it: 74%, 37% and 11%.
Development#
- 31 Oct: the user set the outing endurance rule and the rest-stop limits. Rest then happened at Starwell and the Quiet District Depot.
- 1 Nov: the user moved rest to the Apothecary. The endurance display stays with you beyond Hearth.
- In the alpha: a room attempt reserves its endurance before the room opens, and a reload never refunds it.
