Act III: What Stays After the Signal
Approved Story · facts checked 2 November 2026
Act III: What Stays After the Signal brings earlier observations into new places. It separates a lasting changed state from a stronger response to a real later challenge. It also opens the Quiet District repair and Mote's optional invitation.
Spoiler: Act III (select to show)
The act contains the first possible companion recruitment.
Scenes#
| Scene | What happens |
|---|---|
| III1. The same path, different afternoon | Nearfield Glade changes for the first time. Some routes have recovered. One still needs work. |
| III2. The district that was quiet before any of this | The Ranger meets Wick in the Quiet District. Its old road problem predates the stress story and is not caused by it. |
| III3. The first banked repair | A Quiet Tracts outing gives a first repair. The Ranger clears material but cannot lay myelin; an oligodendrocyte-lineage cell does that. |
| III4. A second challenge is not a second evening | A known region meets a new, signalled challenge. The game does not invent a "memory" where no prior exposure exists. |
| III5. The row of false similarities | Three sites look alike. One is support demand, one is an immune relay, one has a changed history plus a new input. |
| III6. A practical argument at the hearth | Mote wants to check a report in person, but holds the east-line watch. The player can arrange cover and invite Mote into the field. |
| III7. The corrected report | The Ranger corrects a report about Vessel Margins, alone or with Mote. Both routes reach the same scientific finding. |
| III8. The Keeper's Evening | Optional resident stories. Finishing one unlocks its Imprint (Imprints). |
“I know there's something out there. I also know who's covering the east line.”
Recruitment in this act#
If the player invites Mote at III6 (side-story step mote:M5), Mote joins the field roster. This first real recruit unlocks the Coordinator. Its practice (Direct, Swap, Huddle) begins in III7 or another safe outing. If the player declines, Mote stays a full local investigator, and every scene stays solo-completable. See The Uninteresting Ones and Recruitment.
Development#
- Plan: scenes III1–III8 are in plan v0.5 Part IV. The user approved Mote's placement (eligible II7, invited III6, optional joint outing III7) on 31 October.
- The plan's III3 "lead a precursor at its pace" escort was revised on 1 November: the user said "Oligos don't walk, they only extend", so there is no precursor escort. See Oligodendrocyte precursor cell.
- The optional Memory Meadow vignette in III4 cites a stress-then-LPS experiment. See Stress-associated neuroinflammation.
- Nothing in Act III is in the alpha.
