Relay Chain
Retired Encounter · facts checked 2 November 2026
Relay Chain was a real-time encounter family about inflammatory signalling that recruits help, at a cost. Debris kept local microglia alarmed. The alarm spread to astrocytes, which became reactive, and it called in monocytes from the blood.
How it worked#
- Beacons on an inflamed vessel wall lit when the recruitment call was strong.
- Captured responders waited near the vessel, then crossed into the tissue.
- Recruited cells cleared debris fast, but near a tract they stripped myelin from its segments.
- A lingering tone faded only partly on its own. Damping astrocytes and settling recruits let it fall.
- A lost neuron or segment failed the room.
Development#
- 29 October: the story correction said current Relay fragments are not accepted unchanged as the stress encounter.
- 1 November: Claude A put the real-time "stress-model Relay" on hold. The science carried over as a turn-based
relaymodule: when three factors meet at one contact, monocytes adhere there and add load. Adhesion is not entry, and overload is temporary. - The approved form is in Vessel Margins: reactive walls, the calling microglia and the forecast monocyte surge. The user kept monocytes because they "improve the balance or education content of the game".
In the brain#
The family's science line: in mice, alarmed microglia switch nearby astrocytes into a reactive state and call in monocytes, which enter through the vessel wall in stages (Liddelow 2017; D'Mello 2009). Beacons and "settling" a recruit are game rules. Nothing shows recruited cells leaving or dying.
